In 1965 a man named Joe Gold had a simple dream, to open a gym in Venice California. He did this and called the gym Gold's Gym. Dubbed "the Mecca of bodybuilding", it was frequented by many bodybuilding stars including Arnold Schwarzenegger and featured in the 1977 movie Pumping Iron. The movie brought attention not only to the gym itself, but also to the world of bodybuilding and physique in general. To this day, it is considered a landmark in the bodybuilding subculture and has even achieved cult status.

Today, Gold's Gym is the largest fitness club chain the world and is the symbol for bodybuilding gyms. It also licenses its name to products such as fitness equipment and clothing.
