England bag first cricket win in one-day series

England have triumphed in the first match under new one-day captain Alastair Cook, as they thrashed Sri Lanka at the Oval.

James Anderson was the instigator of the victory, as he secured three early wickets that reduced the tourists to 15-4, chasing a target of 232.

The Lancashire paceman returned figures of 4-18 from his five overs and Graeme Swann cleaned up the tail to ensure a 110-run win.

Batting first, England had set about their task with the cricket bat impressively, with Craig Kieswetter firing 61 and Eoin Morgan hitting 45 from 35 balls.

Lengthy rain delays led to the hosts' score of 229 being increased by two under the Duckworth-Lewis method, but Sri Lanka never got close to matching it.

The teams now head to Headingley for Friday's (July 1st) second match of the series, which will be followed by fixtures at Lord's, Trent Bridge and Old Trafford.
